The Technology Investment Dot Info blog is sort of a public filing cabinet –- a place for me to keep track of, make notes on and share bits of news and analysis that affect the technology investment business world-wide. For a living (see disclaimer) I provide out-of-band investment advice to hedge funds and start-ups in addition to developing software and raising deer and cattle on a small farm in New Zealand.
Since a brief stint designing ski lifts and solar equipment I’ve been involved in computing and finance since 1978, originally in Palo Alto at Stanford, SRI and on Sand Hill Road; since then in London, Hong Kong and Sydney. I hold a BSc (Engineering) from Stanford University and an MBA (Finance) from Otago University as well as a CFA charter. In Australia I have served on the finance and economics faculties of Bond University and the University of Melbourne; as a Vice President and Portfolio Manager with BT Funds Management Australia; and as CEO created an ASX-listed technology incubator called Nova Pacific Capital. I personally seeded the first commercial ISP in Australia (now owned by AAPT), and from Nova seeded the first Australian online game network (defunct unfortunately) and founded E*TRADE Securities Australia (now owned by ANZ). About ten years ago I founded TechInvest Pty Limited (now owned by Optiver) which managed global technology equity portfolios, long and short, very successfully until closing its retail funds earlier this year.
I am presently living in Beijing in order to begin learning Mandarin and to begin understanding how the Western business, investment and entrepreneurial models will evolve in the Chinese context.
